- 1099: Crusaders herded the Jews of Jerusalem into a synagogue and set it afire
- 1439: Kissing was banned in England to stop the Black Death from spreading
- 1809: La Paz, Bolivia declared independence from Spain and formed the Junta Tuitiva led by Pedro Domingo Murillo, which was the 1st independent government in Spanish America
- 1894: Many African American miners in Alabama were killed by striking white miners
- 1904: The chiefs of the Islands of Manu’a group (Samoa) ceded their sovereignty to the US
- 1971: The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) withdrew from Stormont (the North Ireland Parliament) after no inquiry was announced into the shooting deaths of Seamus Cusack and Desmond Beattie
- 1990: 400 people died in a 7.7 earthquake in the Philippines
- 1990: The Ukraine declared independence
- 2007: A 6.8 earthquake occurred off the Niigata coast of Japan and killed 8 people, with at least 800 people injured and damaging a nuclear power plant
