- Self-Renewal Day
- 1349: By this date at least 200 people a day were being buried in London as a result of the Black Death
- 1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican–American War. By this treaty, the US acquired Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona for $15 million
- 1906: The Pope issued an encyclical against the separation of church and state
- 1919: Monarchists rioted in Portugal
- 1920: Estonia declared its independence from Russia
- 1932: The Geneva Disarmament Conference began with 60 countries
- 1933: Hermann Goering banned Communist meetings and demonstrations in Germany
- 1954: A rare snow fell on Gibraltar
- 1972: Angry demonstrators burned the British Embassy in Dublin to the ground in protest of the shooting deaths of 13 people on ‘Bloody Sunday’
- 1990: South African President F. W. de Klerk promised to free Nelson Mandela and legalize the ANC and 60 other political organizations
- 2012: A cold snap across Europe killed more than 100 people and over 400 people over the next week
- 2014: Protests in Ukraine turned violent after Parliament passed legislation that outlawed protests
- 2016: The first case of Zika contracted on the US mainland (Texas) and second known sexually transmitted case were confirmed in Texas
