  • 1669: French King Louis XIV limited freedom of religion
  • 1810: The first insurance company managed by African Americans, The African Insurance Company opened in Philadelphia
  • 1814: Mayon Volcano on the Philippines’ Luzon Island erupted, killing 1,200 people
  • 1865: The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution was approved
  • 1865: John S Rock became the first African American lawyer admitted to bar of the Supreme Court
  • 1871: Jefferson Long of Georgia became the first African American to make an official speech in the US House of Representatives when he spoke opposing leniency for former Confederates
  • 1902: China’s Empress Tzu-hsi forbade the practice of binding woman’s feet
  • 1933: Dutch bishops forbid membership in non-Catholic unions
  • 1934: Austrian Chancellor Dollfuss dissolved all political parties but his
  • 1952: A General Strike against French colonial rule was held in Tunisia
  • 1953: Flooding in the Netherlands killed 1,835 people
  • 1959: Swiss men voted against voting rights for women

  • 1965: Martin Luther King Jr. and 700 demonstrators were arrested in Selma, Alabama
  • 1975: Otis Tabler became the first openly homosexual person to get security clearance to work for the US Defense Department
  • 1977: A blizzard in upstate New York and Southern Ontario killed 23 people
  • 1978: Harriet Tubman became the first African American woman to be honored on a US postage stamp
  • 1984: China and the Netherlands reestablished diplomatic relations
  • 1991: Afghanistan and Pakistan were hit by an earthquake that caused 1,200 deaths
  • 1991: South African President F. W. de Klerk said he will repeal all apartheid laws
  • 2005: Canada introduced the Civil Marriage Act, making Canada the fourth country to sanction same-sex marriage
  • 2009: Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was elected as the first female Prime Minister of Iceland, and the first openly gay Head of Government in the modern world
  • 2014: 14 people were killed after Mount Sinabung in Indonesia erupted
  • 2014: The death toll from the Syrian civil war reached 130,000 deaths while 4 million people were displaced
  • 2016: The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global public health emergency over the rapid spread of zika-linked conditions
  • 2020: The largest locust swarm event in 25 years swarmed across East Africa causing Somalia to declare a national emergency
  • 2021: Wildfires ignited on the outskirts of Perth, Australia, forcing evacuations amid a five-day COVID-19 lockdown
