Here’s this week’s news stories, studies, etc. related to preparedness that contain potentially helpful information. The sources used here aren’t all the sources checked, but the other sites didn’t have new information. If there are other sources you think should be checked, please let me know what they are!

“Experts from across the Columbia Climate School help to explain [the flooding in California] and what it means in the broader conversation of climate change and disaster response.” One of the important takeaways is that the current models of weather forecasting and preparedness efforts don’t connect very well and emergency management doesn’t usually look at and prepare for events like atmospheric rivers.

The federal government released annual weather data that details the impacts of climate change and looks at the future.

A retrospective looking at what we have learned from the Pandemic Era the last 3 years has identified 5 lessons we should learn to improve response to future pandemics. The 5 lessons are:

  1. Preemptive preparedness and investment are vital
  2. “Nimbleness” in other words the ability to respond quickly and with flexibility is important
  3. Trust is vial. Trust between government, the public, and other organizations
  4. Global cooperation is vital to a quick, effective response
  5. A commitment to equity is very important to ensuring the vulnerable aren’t left out and thereby worse off

A discussion of how studies show “meditation and mindfulness offer an abundance of health benefits and may be as effective as medication for treating certain conditions” although it can be difficult to do research into mindfulness and meditation.

A study was done on attempts to save lives of people drowning at the beach in Australia. There were 5 keys that were identified as being important to saving the other person’s life, but also keeping yourself safe and reducing the odds of you drowning during an attempt to rescue someone else. The 5 keys are:

  1. Choosing a patrolled beach
  2. Understanding and being able to identify rip currents
  3. Staying calm and making a plan
  4. Taking and using a flotation device
  5. Knowing how to perform effective CPR
