Weekly Preparedness Roundup: January 6, 2023

| | |

Today I’m implementing a trial of doing a weekly update for news related to preparedness, including food safety, recalls, studies, etc. With that, here’s the list for the first week of 2023!

Scientists say climate change could cause ‘disaster’ in the world’s oceans by inhibiting the ocean’s ability to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, further exacerbating global warming.

SunSprouts recalled 808 pounds (366.5 kilograms) of sprouts that it sold to distributors in Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas in November and December. Health officials have said they linked the illnesses to alfalfa sprouts eaten at several restaurants and sold at several different grocery chains.

Sergi Morais, professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Universitat Politècnica de València and researcher at the Inter-University Institute of Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) has developed a method of quickly and easily testing for allergens that can be done by anyone, anywhere. The prototype has been developed as a proof of concept for simultaneously detecting almond and peanut allergens and has been validated with everyday commercial foods such as biscuits and energy bars.

Global prices for food commodities like grain and vegetable oils were the highest on record last year even after falling for nine months in a row, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said, as Russia’s war in Ukraine, drought and other factors drove up inflation and worsened hunger worldwide.

The practice of ‘Intercropping‘ enables more productivity on less land but the practice appears to be on the decline globally.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the administration will invest millions of dollars to diversify the meat supply chain while announcing more than two dozen initiatives which aim to increase independent meat processing.

A study from the National Institutes of Health adults who stay well-hydrated appear to be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions, such as heart and lung disease, and live longer than those who may not get sufficient fluids.

That’s it for this week. Let me know what you think of the weekly format and what sources you use for news about preparedness and other related topics! You can email me at contact@llphp.org.

Currently, I’m running an introductory special on the Life, Liberty, And Pursuit Of Happiness Project’s Prepare and Protect Preparedness Coaching Program. Check it out if you’d like to be better prepared!
