- 1930: 22 people were killed by hailstones in Siatista, Greece
- 1966: The US Supreme Court released their Miranda decision stating suspects must be informed of their rights
- 1967: Thurgood Marshall was nominated to become the first African American US Supreme Court justice
- 1971: The New York Times began publishing excerpts from the Pentagon Papers, classified documents on the long history of US involvement in Vietnam
- 2002: The US withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty
- 2011: Christchurch, New Zealand was hit by another strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.3
