On This Day

  • 1557: The first Russian Embassy arrived in London
  • 1670: Jews were expelled from Austria by order of Leopold I
  • 1801: Washington, DC was placed under Congressional jurisdiction
  • 1803: Bombay, India experienced a Great Fire
  • 1813: The first federal vaccination legislation in the US was enacted
  • 1844: The Dominican Republic gained independence from Haiti
  • 1861: Russians shot at Poles protesting Russian rule of Poland in Castle Square, Warsaw
  • 1872: Charlotte Ray, the first African American woman lawyer in the US, graduated from Howard University
  • 1873: Dutch socialist Samuel van Wooden demanded a law against child labor
  • 1900: In London, the Trades Union Congress and the Independent Labour Party (formed in 1893) met, resulting in a Labour Representative Committee and, in 1906, the modern Labour Party
  • 1921: The International Working Union of Socialist Parties was founded in Vienna
  • 1921: Fascists incited a riot in Florence, Italy
  • 1922: The US Supreme Court unanimously upheld the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution regarding women’s right to vote
  • 1925: Adolf Hitler resurrected the NSDAP (Nazi) Party in Munich
  • 1939: The US Supreme Court outlawed “sit-down strikes” in which workers strike on-site preventing work from getting done
  • 1942: The first transport of French Jews left for Nazi Germany
  • 1943: The week-long Rosenstrasse protest against the arrest and deportation of German Jews started in Berlin
  • 1951: The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, which limits US Presidents to 2 terms
  • 1956: Female suffrage was granted in Egypt
  • 1967: Dominica gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1971: Doctors in the first Dutch abortion clinic began performing induced abortions
  • 1972: US President Richard Nixon and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai issued the Shanghai Communique pledging to work towards normalizing relations between the two nations
  • 1980: Israel and Egypt exchanged ambassadors
  • 1998: Britain’s House of Lords agreed to end 1,000 years of male precedence by giving a monarch’s first-born daughter the same claim to the throne as any first born son
  • 2007: The weeks-long general strike against Guinea’s authoriarian leader Lansana Conté ended
  • 2010: Central Chile was hit with a magnitude 8.8 earthquake
  • 2012: Wikileaks began disclosing 5 million emails from private intelligence company Stratfor
  • 2014: US Republican Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a “religious freedom” bill that would have allowed businesses to turn away gay customers
  • 2019: The first federal gun control legislation for 25 years was passed by the US House of Representatives with new federal background checks
