- 1642: Massachusetts passed the first compulsory education law in America
- 1846: The Belgian Liberal Party formed
- 1846: California declared independence from Mexico and declared itself the California Republic
- 1850: The third great fire of early San Francisco raged through the city
- 1872: Trade unions were legalised in Canada
- 1906: A Pogrom was carried out against Jews in Bialystok, Polish Russia
- 1907: Norway adopted female suffrage for middle class women only in parliamentary elections
- 1935: The Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay ended
- 1941: Estonia lost 11,000 inhabitants as a result of mass deportations to Siberia
- 1954: President Eisenhower signed an order adding the words “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance
- 1973: US President Richard Nixon’s administration imposed a 60-day economy-wide price freeze, superseding Special Rule No. 1 for oil companies
- 1981: The No Nukes Concert was held at the Hollywood Bowl
- 1990: The US Supreme Court ruled police check points for drunk drivers constitutional
- 2013: Massive flooding occurred in northern India killing up to 10,000 people
- 2013: The US government charged NSA leaker Edward Snowden with violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property
- 2017: A fire in Grenfell Tower Block in London, England killed 79 people and injured 37 people
