On This Day

  • International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day
  • 1654: Jews were expelled from Brazil
  • 1933: Jewish students were barred from school in Germany
  • 1938: Austrian Jews were required to register property above a value of 5,000 Reichsmarks
  • 1986: The fourth reactor at Chernobyl nuclear power station in the USSR exploded. 31 people died and radioactive contamination reached much of Western Europe. It was the worst nuclear disaster in history.
  • 1990: 126 people died in a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in China
  • 1991: 23 people were killed in Kansas and Oklahoma by tornadoes
  • 1994: The first day of voting in the first ever multi-racial elections in South Africa. Dr Nomaza Paintin was the first black South African to vote
