On This Day

  • 1664: Maryland passed its first anti-amalgamation law to stop the intermarriage of English women and black men
  • 1697: The Treaty of Ryswick ended the 9 Years War
  • 1830: The first Negro Convention of Free Men agreed to boycott slave-produced goods
  • 1850: The Slave trade was abolished in Washington, DC, but slavery was allowed to continue
  • 1884: The Equal Rights Party nominated female candidates for both US President and Vice President
  • 1946: British Prime Minister Churchill argued for a ‘United States of Europe’
  • 1951: Swiss males voted against female suffrage
  • 1961: African-American student James Meredith was first refused enrollment at the segregated University of Mississippi
  • 1962: Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett refused to admit African-American, James Meredith, to University of Mississippi
  • 1967: Benin separated from Nigeria
  • 1967: Hurricane Beulah hit the Texas-Mexican border and killed 38 people
  • 1990: Both East and West Germany ratified reunification
  • 1990: South Ossetia declared its independence from Georgia
  • 2003: A referendum was held in Latvia to decide the country’s accession to the European Union
  • 2011: The United States ended its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, allowing gay men and women to serve openly for the first time
  • 2017: Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico as a category 4 hurricane, knocking out all power and killing 25 people
  • 2019: Rare Egyptian political protests took place against corruption in President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi’s government in Tahrir Square, Cairo and elsewhere
