On This Day

  • National Agriculture Day
  • 1593: English Separatist Puritans John Greenwood and Henry Barrowe were tried and sentenced to death on the charge of devising and circulating seditious books
  • 1775: Patrick Henry proclaimed “Give me liberty or give me death” in a speech in favour of Virginian troops joining the US Revolutionary war
  • 1867: the US Congress passed the second Reconstruction Act over President Andrew Johnson’s veto
  • 1881: a gas lamp set fire to an opera house in Nice, France. 70 died in the fire.
  • 1882: The Edmunds Act (Edmunds Anti-Polygamy Act) was adopted by the US to suppress polygamy
  • 1917: Tornadoes killed 211 over 4 days in the Midwestern US
  • 1918: Lithuania proclaimed independence
  • 1942: 2,500 Jews of Lublin were massacred or deported
  • 1956: Sudan became independent
  • 1965: the Moroccan army fired on demonstrators killing about 100
  • 1976: the International Bill of Rights went into effect after ratification by 35 nations
  • 1991: 20 Tornadoes killed 5 in Tennessee
  • 2013: 20 people were killed and 200 were injured by a tornado in Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh
  • 2019: More than 1 million marched to demand a new EU referendum in London, England
