1921: The Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA) was formed. The party later changed its name to the South African Communist Party (SACP)
1942: The German SS killed 25,000 Jews in Minsk, Belorussia
1942: German occupiers forced a night curfew on Jews in The Netherlands
1967: 4 people were killed during a race riot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
1970: Hurricane Celia formed. Between this day and August 5, it killed 31 people in Cuba, Florida and Texas
1970: Riots hit Belfast, Northern Ireland
1980: Vanuatu (New Hebrides) gained independence from Britain and France
2013: Wikileaks Whistleblower Chelsea Manning was convicted of 17 espionage charges
