- Separation of Church and State Day
- Statue of Liberty Dedication Day
- 1746: The Peruvian cities of Lima and Callao were demolished by an earthquake in which 18,000 people died
- 1846: Pioneers suffered through a blizzard in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and 42 people died
- 1886: The Statue of Liberty was dedicated by US President Grover Cleveland
- 1891: An earthquake struck Mino-Owari, Japan and killed 7,300 people
- 1918: Czechoslovakia gained independence as Austria-Hungary broke up
- 1919: The Volstead Act passed by US Congress over President Woodrow Wilson’s veto, established prohibition
- 1921: The first American gubernatorial recall election was held in South Dakota
- 1939: Czechoslovakia experienced anti-German demonstrations and strikes
- 2017: Spain’s central government imposed direct rule on Catalonia in retaliation for Catalan independence efforts
- 2019: Landslides after heavy rains in Bafoussam, Cameroon buried and killed at least 42 people
- 2020: Global COVID-19 cases recorded a one-day increase of more than 500,000 for the first time, rising 25% in under two weeks according to Reuters
- 2020: Hurricane Zeta made landfall in the US near Cocodrie, Louisiana
- 2020: Typhoon Molave struck Vietnam triggering heavy rain and landslides that left more than 60 people dead
