On This Day
- All Souls Day
- International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists
- 1648: 12,000 Jews were massacred by Chmielnicki hordes in Narol Podlia
- 1915: Ashtabula, Ohio held the first US election by proportional representation
- 1943: The Jewish ghetto of Riga Latvia was destroyed
- 1949: The Netherlands recognized its former colony Indonesia as a sovereign state
- 1954: Strom Thurmond of South Carolina became the first senator elected by write-in vote
- 1968: A banned march by members of the Derry Citizen’s Action Committee (DCAC) in Derry, North Ireland was joined by thousands. Due to the number of people taking part, the Royal Ulster Constabulary was unable to prevent it
- 1997: Typhoon Linda killed at least 208 people in southern Vietnam
