  • 1303: An estimated magnitude 8 earthquake hit the island of Crete triggering a major tsunami
  • 1700: Denmark and Sweden signed a peace treaty
  • 1868: An earthquake destroyed the city of Arica, Chile
  • 1919: The British recognised Afghanistan’s independence
  • 1949: Bhutan became an independent monarchy
  • 1955: The Geneva Conference was held to discuss peaceful uses of atomic energy
  • 1960: Ivory Coast declared independence
  • 1960: South Kasai seceded from the Congo
  • 1968: Miami, Florida experienced a race riot
  • 1975: Rainfall from Typhoon Nina caused China’s Banqiao Dam to fail. The flooding caused 6 million building collapses and 229,000 deaths
  • 1988: Over a 4 day period, the Army in Rangoon, Myanmar killed thousands of pro-democracy students during the “8888 Uprising”
  • 1988: South Africa declared a cease-fire in Angola
  • 1988: A ceasefire between Iran and Iraq began after 8 years of war
  • 1993: Tropical storm Bret ravaged Venezuela killing about 100 people
  • 2007: A tornado touched down in Kings County and Richmond County, New York State. It was the most powerful in New York to date and the first in Brooklyn since 1889.
  • 2012: 16 people were killed from flooding from heavy rain in Manilla, Philippines
