  • International Stress Awareness Day
  • 1394: Jews were expelled from France by Charles VI
  • 1783: George Washington ordered the Continental Army disbanded
  • 1839: Freedom of religion was proclaimed in Turkey
  • 1868: John Willis Menard (Louisiana) became the first black US Congressman to be elected, but opposition to his election prevented his being seated in Congress
  • 1883: Race riots resulted in the deaths of 4 African Americans in Danville, Virginia
  • 1883: The US Supreme Court decided federal courts have no jurisdiction over Native American Tribal Councils
  • 1885: Vigilantes in Tacoma, Washington drove out people of Chinese ancestry and burned their homes and businesses
  • 1903: Colombia granted independence to Panama
  • 1905: Tsar Nicholas II of Russia signed a document of amnesty for political prisoners
  • 1918: The Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved
  • 1918: Poland proclaimed independence from Russia after World War I
  • 1927: Flooding from a tropical storm killed 84 people in the Winooski River Valley, Vermont
  • 1964: For the first time since 1800, residents of Washington, DC were permitted to vote
  • 1978: Dominica gained independence from the United Kingdom
  • 1978: The USSR and Vietnam signed a peace and friendship treaty
  • 1979: Five people were mortally wounded during an anti-Ku Klux Klan demonstration in North Carolina
  • 1984: 3,000 people died in 3 days of anti-Sikh riots in India
  • 1989: Hundreds of Bulgarians demonstrated in Sofia for democratic rights
  • 1992: Carol Moseley-Braun (Illinois) became the first African-American woman elected to the US Senate
  • 1997: A California law ended affirmative action
  • 2014: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for global action on climate change after warnings from scientists
  • 2020: Hurricane Eta made landfall in Nicaragua as a Category Four storm with winds of 140 km, killing at least 235 people across Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Panama
