On This Day
- 526: The Antioch earthquake in the Byzantine Empire killed 200,000 people
- 1349: The Jews of Augsburg, Germany were massacred
- 1516: The French and Swiss signed the Treaty of Freiburg, an “eternal” peace treaty
- 1781: The crew of the slave ship Zong murdered about 142 African slaves by dumping them into the sea to claim insurance money
- 1803: Dessalines and Christophe declared St Domingue (Haiti) independent
- 1870: Compulsory education was proclaimed in England
- 1887: The US received the rights to Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii
- 1916: The US declared martial law in the Dominican Republic
- 1932: France and the USSR signed a non-aggression pact
- 1947: The UN General Assembly partitioned Palestine between Arabs and Jews
- 1961: Civil Rights Freedom Riders were attacked by a white mob at a bus station in Mississippi
- 1975: Kilauea Volcano erupted in Hawaii
- 1975: US President Gerald Ford required states to provide free education for people experiencing disabilities
- 2007: A widely felt 7.4 earthquake occurred off the Northern coast of Martinique. It was felt as far North as Puerto Rico and as far South as Trinidad
