  • Disaster Day
  • 1428: King Alfonso V, ordered Sicily’s Jews to attend conversion sermons
  • 1597: A group of early Japanese Christians, known as the 26 Martyrs, were killed by the new government of Japan for being seen as a threat to Japanese society
  • 1663: The Charlevoix Earthquake in Quebec was felt strongly in much of New England
  • 1679: German emperor Leopold I signed a peace treaty with France
  • 1783: Earthquakes ravaged Calabria, killing approximately 30,000 people
  • 1887: A rare snow fell on San Francisco
  • 1894: A female suffrage organization was formed in Amsterdam
  • 1904: The American occupation of Cuba ended
  • 1918: Separation of church and state began in the USSR
  • 1923: A general mine workers strike against wage cuts began in Saar
  • 1923: Mass arrests of socialists and communists were carried out in Italy
  • 1946: The Chondoist Chongu Party was founded in North Korea
  • 1974: British miners began their strike in reaction to the three-day week
  • 1978: A blizzard formed that would kill 100 people in New England and New York over the next 3 days
  • 1980: The Egyptian Parliament voted to end the boycott of Israel
  • 1994: Medgar Evers’ murderer Byron De La Beckwith was sentenced to life in prison, 30 years after the crime
  • 1997: Japan’s Ministry of Finance announced plans to cut import tariffs on crude oil and most petroleum products
  • 2008: A major tornado outbreak across the Southern United States left at least 58 people dead
  • 2013: The UK House of Commons voted in favor of same-sex marriage
  • 2014: US President Obama and journalists globally called for the release of 3 Al Jazeera journalists detained in Egypt
  • 2019: Pope Francis admitted for the first time that clerics had sexually abused nuns
