  • Giving Tuesday
  • International Computer Security Day
  • 1487: The first German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot), was promulgated in Munich by Albert IV, Duke of Bavaria, stating beer should be brewed from only three ingredients – water, malt and hops
  • 1523: Amsterdam banned the assembly of heretics
  • 1630: 16,000 inhabitants of Venice died this month of plague
  • 1678: Roman Catholics were banned from the English Parliament
  • 1731: Beijing was hit by an earthquake causing the deaths of about 100,000 people
  • 1735: The States of Holland forbade Free Masonry
  • 1782: Britain signed an agreement recognizing US independence
  • 1786: Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II promulgated penal reform, making his the first state to abolish the death penalty
  • 1803: Spain ceded her claims to the Louisiana Territory to France
  • 1908: The US Secretary of State and Japan’s Ambassador to the US exchanged notes in what came to be known as the Root-Takahira Agreement, affirming support for an independent China, with an ‘open door’ policy, and for the status quo in the Pacific
  • 1938: Germany banned Jews from being lawyers
  • 1966: Barbados gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1967: The Kuria Muria Islands were ceded by Great Britain to Oman
  • 1967: The People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen declared independence from the UK
  • 1967: The Pakistan Peoples Party was founded by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto
  • 1968: A Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march in Armagh was stopped by the Royal Ulster Constabulary because of the presence of a Loyalist counter demonstration
  • 1988: A cyclone lashed Bangladesh and Eastern India, killing 317 people
  • 1991: A major dust storm near San Francisco caused an accident involving 93 cars and 11 trucks in which 17 people died
  • 2006: South Africa’s Civil Union Act of 2006 legalized same-sex marriage, making it the fifth country in the world and first nation in Africa to do so
  • 2018: A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Anchorage, Alaska
