On This Day
- 1821: Panama declared independence from Spain
- 1843: Ka Lahui: The Kingdom of Hawaii was officially recognized by the UK and France as an independent nation
- 1893: Women voted in a national election for the first time, in New Zealand’s general election
- 1905: Arthur Griffith formed Sinn Féin in Dublin
- 1912: Ismail Qemali declared Albania independent from Turkey
- 1919: American-born Lady Nancy Astor was elected as the first female member of the British House of Commons
- 1958: Chad, Congo, and Mauritania became autonomous members within the French community
- 1960: Mauritania gained independence from France
- 2020: Thousands of farmers began entering Delhi to protest proposed agriculture reforms
