  • 1775: The first abolitionist society in the US was organized in Philadelphia
  • 1849: Hungary declared itself independent of Austria
  • 1865: US President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington. He died a day later
  • 1913: Belgium began a general strike for voting rights
  • 1941: 3,600 Jews were rounded up in the first massive German raid in Paris
  • 1969: A tornado struck Dacca, in Eastern Pakistan killing 540
  • 1971: President Nixon ended the blockade against the People’s Republic of China
  • 1971: The US Supreme Court upheld busing as means of achieving racial desegregation
  • 1973: Acting FBI director L Patrick Gray resigned after admitting he destroyed evidence in the Watergate scandal
  • 1999: NATO mistakenly bombed a convoy of ethnic Albanian refugees killing 75 people
  • 2005: The Oregon Supreme Court nullified marriage licenses issued to gay couples a year earlier by Multnomah County
  • 2019: 11 tornadoes hit US southern states killing eight in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana
