• 1253: Nichiren, a Japanese Buddhist monk, propounded Nam Myoho Renge Kyo for the first time and declares it to be the essence of Buddhism, in effect founding Nichiren Buddhism
• 1253: A fire started in Utrecht that destroyed the city over the next several days
• 1818: US President James Monroe proclaimed naval disarmament on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain
• 1829: The Dutch Parliament accepted new press laws
• 1848: Slavery was abolished in French colonies
• 1925: The Netherlands and Great Britain returned to the gold standard
• 1989: Argentina, hit by rocketing inflation, ran out of money
