• 1714: The Treaty of Rastatt was signed by Austria and France ending their hostilities during the War of the Spanish Succession
• 1816: Jews were expelled from the Free City of Lubeck, Germany
• 1857: In the infamous Dred Scott Decision, the US Supreme Court ruled African Americans cannot be US citizens
• 1900: After a meeting in Indianapolis, a group formed the Social Democratic Party and nominated Eugene Debs as its candidate for President. They became the Socialist Party in 1901
• 1921: Police in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, issued an edict requiring women to wear skirts at least 4 inches below the knee
• 1951: Belgium extended conscription to 24 months
• 1957: Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) declared independence from the United Kingdom
• 1984: A year-long strike in the British coal industry began
• 1987: A 6.8 earthquake hit Ecuador, killing 100 people
• 2017: US President Donald Trump signed his second executive order barring travelers from 6 mostly-Muslim countries for 90 days but excluding Iraq
