- Iwo Jima Day
- In 1539, the Jews of Tyrnau Hungary (then Trnava Czech) were expelled
- In 1600, the Peruvian volcano Huaynaputina exploded in the most violent eruption in recorded South American history
- In 1884, an outbreak of tornadoes in Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana killed 800 people
- In 1910, Typhoid Mary (Mary Mallon) was freed from her first period of forced isolation and went on to cause several further outbreaks of typhoid in the New York area
- In 1933, Prussian minister Goering banned all Catholic newspapers
- In 1942, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered the detention and internment of Japanese Americans
- In 2019, New York City banned hair discrimination to limit racial stereotyping
