On This Day

  • 1865: An earthquake occurred in the Santa Cruz Mountains
  • 1871: The deadliest forest fire to date destroyed Peshtigo, Wisconsin, killing between 1,200 and 2,500 people
  • 1871: The Great Fire of Chicago killed 200 people and destroyed over 4 square miles (10 square km) of buildings as well as the original copy of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation
  • 1970: The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) proposed using Proportional Representation (PR) in Northern Ireland’s elections
  • 1980: USSR and Syria signed a peace treaty
  • 2005: The Kashmir Earthquake hit northern South Asia
  • 2017: Wildfires ignited in Northern Californian wine country, killing at least 41 people over the next week, and causing 20,000 people to evacuate
  • 2018: The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a major climate report predicting the Earth will warm 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) by 2040 with dire results
