Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. Please note all holidays and observances listed as “National” days are American holidays and observances unless it is stated otherwise.

On This Day

  • International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
  • 1823: US President James Monroe declared the “Monroe Doctrine” opposing European colonialism in the Americas and arguing that any European political intervention in the New World would be a hostile act against the United States
  • 1845: US President James K. Polk advocated to Congress for the concept of Manifest Destiny the belief that the United States should aggressively expand into the West
  • 1954: Taiwan (ROC) and the US signed a Mutual Defense Treaty, preventing Mainland China (PRC) from taking Taiwan between 1955-1979
  • 1954: The US Senate censured Joseph McCarthy for “conduct that tends to bring Senate into dishonor and disrepute”
  • 1999: The United Kingdom devolved political power in Northern Ireland to the Northern Ireland Executive
  • 2014: Hong Kong pro-democracy activists clashed with police as they tried to surround the government’s headquarters in some of the worst violence since the protests began
  • 2017: Egyptian lawyer Nabih al-Wahsh was sentenced to 3 years in prison for saying women wearing ripped jeans should be raped
  • 2020: The US recorded its largest daily death toll from COVID-19 to date at 2,885 deaths and exceeded 100,000 hospitalizations for the first time
