- 1567: Jews were expelled from Brazil by the order of regent Don Henrique
- 1867: US President Andrew Johnson announced the Alaska Purchase
- 1911: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) incorporated in New York
- 1919: 150 people died in the Teatro Yaguez fire, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
- 1942: Adolf Eichmann proclaimed the deportation of Dutch Jews
- 1943: In Detroit, Michigan, during a Race Riot 35 people were killed
- 1943: Germans rounded up Jews in Amsterdam
- 1944: The US Congress chartered the Central Intelligence Agency
- 1944: Nazis began the mass extermination of Jews at Auschwitz

- 1988: The US Supreme Court upheld a law that made it illegal for private clubs to discriminate against women and minorities
- 2019: Oregon Governor Kate Brown authorized police to round up 11 Republican State Senators who went into hiding to prevent a vote on a proposed cap-and-trade emissions bill
