- US Energy Independence Day
- Global Energy Independence Day
- 1212: The most severe of several early fires of London burned most of the city to the ground
- 1520: King Charles V France and King Henry VIII of England signed the Treaty of Calais
- 1775: Horatio Gates issued orders excluding blacks from the Continental Army
- 1919: The Dutch First Chamber approved woman suffrage
- 1923: 2-pound hailstones killed 23 people and many cattle in Rostov, Russia
- 1923: All non-fascist parties were dissolved in Italy
- 1924: Denmark took control of Greenland as Norway ended their claim to the territory
- 1924: A railroad worker strike in Amsterdam ended
- 1941: Jewish people living in and near the village of Jedwabne, Poland were massacred in the Jedwabne Pogrom
- 1942: Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler ordered the sterilization of all Jewish woman in Ravensbruck Concentration Camp
- 1956: 650,000 US steel workers went on strike
- 1973: The Bahamas declared independence from the UK
- 2012: The American Episcopal Church became the first to approve a rite for blessing gay marriages
- 2013: 40 people were buried in landslides in Sichuan Province, China
- 2020: The sixth century cathedral Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque by a decree issued by Turkish President Erdogan
