Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • National Stress Awareness Day
  • Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day
  • 1713: Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI issued the Pragmatic Sanction decreeing that Habsburg possessions could be inherited by a daughter
  • 1775: The American Revolution began in Lexington, Massachusetts with the “Shot Heard Round the World” taking place in Concord later that day
  • 1839: The Treaty of London constituted as Belgium an independent kingdom and Luxembourg a Grand Duchy
  • 1904: Much of Toronto was destroyed by a great fire
  • 1906: San Francisco experienced a major earthquake that killed 452 people
  • 1916: Alderman Kelly read the ‘Castle Order’, a forged document supposedly from Dublin Castle, to a meeting of the Dublin Corporation, which indicated that there was to be mass arrests of Irish Volunteers to prevent “trouble”
  • 1919: The French Assembly legislated an 8 hour work day
  • 1923: A new Egyptian law allowed for suffrage for men, except soldiers
  • 1927: Actress Mae West was found guilty of “obscenity and corrupting the morals of youth” in a New York stage play entitled “Sex”. She was sentenced to 10 days in prison and fined $500,but the resulting publicity launches her Hollywood career
  • 1932: President Herbert Hoover suggested a 5 day work week
  • 1933: US President Franklin D Roosevelt announced the US will leave the gold standard
  • 1936: Anti-Jewish riots broke out on what became the first day of the Great Uprising in Palestine
  • 1939: Connecticut finally approved the Bill of Rights (148 years late)
  • 1941: Milk rationing was enacted in Holland
  • 1943: SS officer Jürgen Stroop ordered the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto after Jewish residents refused to surrender, beginning the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
  • 1945: Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Guatemala were established
  • 1968: Belgian construction workers went on strike
  • 1969: Serious rioting in the Bogside area of Derry broke out following clashes between Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association marchers and Loyalists and members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary
  • 1979: The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raided and shut down pirate radio station WFAT in Brooklyn, New York
  • 1989: Central Park Five: The widely publicized violent rape of jogger Trisha Meili took place in NYC’s Central Park. The “Central Park 5”, 5 young men of colour were wrongfully convicted and spent years in prison. The convictions were vacated after another inmate confessed to the crime
  • 1990: Contra guerrillas, leftist Sandinistas, and the incoming government agreed to a truce in Nicaragua’s civil war
  • 1993: After a 51 day siege by the FBI and other government agencies, 76 Branch Davidians were killed in a fire near Waco Texas when the government agents tried to assault the compound and bring the siege to an end
  • 1993: A fire in a psychiatric institute in South Korea killed 40 people
  • 1994: The US Supreme Court outlawed excluding people from juries because of their gender
