On This Day

  • 1572: 19 Catholic priests were hanged in Gorcum, Netherlands during the wars brought about by the Protestant Reformation
  • 1609: Emperor Rudolf II granted Bohemian protestants freedom of religion
  • 1816: Argentina declared independence from Spain at the Congress of Tucumán
  • 1868: Louisiana and South Carolina were the last states to ratify the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, guaranteeing people civil rights
  • 1908: The Dutch CHU (Christian Historic Union) political party formed
  • 1932: The state of São Paulo revolted against the Brazilian federal government, starting the Constitutionalist Revolution
  • 1986: The New Zealand Parliament passed the Homosexual Law Reform Bill which legalized consensual sex between men aged 16 and older
  • 1987: 1 million South Koreans demonstrated against the Chun Doo Hwan regime
  • 1999: Days of student protests began after Iranian police and hardliners attacked a dormitory at the University of Tehran
  • 2011: South Sudan seceded from Sudan and gained independence
  • 2014: Typhoon Rammasun began and killed 151 people over its existence
  • 2017: Hundreds of thousands of people protested against the Turkish government at a rally in Istanbul, Turkey
  • 2019: Northern Ireland MPs voted to allow same-sex marriage and abortion to bring it in line with rest of the UK
  • 2020: In McGirt v. Oklahoma, the US Supreme Court ruled Congress had not disestablished Oklahoma Indian reserves
