- 365: Crete experienced an earthquake that caused a tsunami around the Eastern Mediterranean and allegedly destroyed Alexandria
- 1542: Pope Paul III began an inquisition against Protestants
- 1730: The States of Holland prescribed the death penalty for “sodomy”
- 1773: Pope Clemens XIV banned Jesuits
- 1825: Java princess Dipo Negoro/Mangkubumi declared war on all non-Muslims
- 1831: Belgium gained independence from The Netherlands
- 1866: A cholera epidemic killed hundreds in London
- 1877: The US Army began a six day effort to break a railroad strike
- 1925: John T. Scopes was found guilty of teaching evolution in the “Scopes monkey trial”
- 1952: A 7.8 earthquake shook Kern County, California killing 14 people
- 1954: France agreed to independence for North and South Vietnam
- 1962: 160 civil right activists were jailed after demonstration in Albany, Georgia
- 1964: Race riots in Singapore between Chinese and Malay groups resulted in 23 people being killed with 454 people injured
- 1970: Libya ordered the confiscation of all Jewish property
