On This Day

  • Religious Freedom Day
  • World Religion Day
  • 1219: Flooding in Northern Netherlands after a storm killed thousands of people
  • 1362: A great storm tide in the North Sea destroyed the German island of Strand and the city of Rungholt
  • 1581: The English Parliament passed laws against Catholicism
  • 1777: Vermont declared independence from New York
  • 1913: The British House of Commons accepted Home Rule for Ireland, but the World War I interfered with implementation
  • 1918: Austria and Germany were disrupted by strikes as people expressed impatience with their leaders continuing World War I
  • 1920: Georgia declared independence
  • 1936: Spanish socialists, communists, and anarchists formed Unidad Popular
  • 1953: Egyptian Premier General Naguib disbanded all political parties
  • 1968: The Youth International Party was founded
  • 1974: A landslide killed 9 people in Canyonville, Oregon
  • 1992: The Chapultepec Peace Accords were signed in Mexico City ending the 12-year Salvadoran Civil War
