  • Dream Day
  • 1649: The Frondeurs, French rebels, and the French government signed the Peace of Rueil
  • 1665: New York approved a new code guaranteeing the religious rights of Protestants
  • 1669: Sicily, Italy’s Mt Etna experienced its largest recorded eruption which killed 15,000 people
  • 1812: Citizenship was granted to Prussian Jews
  • 1845: In New Zealand’s Flagstaff War, 700 Māoris chopped down the British flagpole and drove settlers out of the British colonial settlement of Kororareka because of breaches of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi
  • 1864: Known as The Great Sheffield Flood, the largest man-made disaster ever to befall England killed over 250 people in Sheffield when the Dale Dyke Dam crumbled and its reservoir emptied
  • 1888: The “Great Blizzard of ’88” struck the Northeastern United States
  • 1918: US Army mess cook Private Albert Gitchell of Fort Riley, Kansas was the first documented case of Spanish flu marking the beginning of the worldwide Spanish Flu Pandemic that killed 50-100 million people
  • 1919: A general strike in Germany was crushed by the government
  • 1942: The first deportation train left Paris for Auschwitz Concentration Camp
  • 1953: FM Adams became the first commissioned female army doctor commissioned
  • 1959: “Raisin in the Sun”, the first Broadway play written by a black woman, opened
  • 1963: Somalia dropped diplomatic relations with Great Britain
  • 1974: Sicily’s Mount Etna erupted
  • 1990: Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union
  • 2011: A 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed thousands of people and caused the second worst nuclear accident in history at Fukushima nuclear plant
  • 2013: In a referendum on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands’, 99.8% of voters chose to remain a Territory of the UK
  • 2014: Refugees from Syria poured into the Kingdom of Jordan
  • 2017: At least 65 people were killed in a landslide at a rubbish dump near Addis Ababa, Ethopia
  • 2020: COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization with 121,564 cases worldwide and 4,373 deaths
