- Independence Day
- 1776: The US Congress proclaimed independence from Great Britain
- 1827: Slavery was abolished in New York
- 1874: The Social Democratic Workmen’s Party of North America was formed
- 1906: Great Britain, France, and Italy declared Ethiopia (Abyssinia) independent, but laid claim to their own ‘spheres of influence’ in that land
- 1917: Russian Provisional Government troops opened fire on protesters in Petrograd during the ‘July Days’ of unrest
- 1919: The ADGB (Allgemeine Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund) party formed
- 1926: The Nazi party formed in Weimar, Germany
- 1927: Sukarno and friends formed the pro-Indonesian independence party, the PNI (Perserikatan Nasional Indonesia) in Batavia, Dutch East Indies
- 1938: The France-Turkish friendship treaty was signed
- 1941: Latvian partisans shot and killed about 416 Jews
- 1946: During Anti-Jewish riots in Kielce, Poland, 42 people died
- 1946: The Philippines gained independence from the US
- 1966: US President LBJ signed the Freedom of Information Act
- 2019:The Ridgecrest area experienced a magnitude 6.4 earthquake, the largest earthquake in California in 20 years
- 2020: Record rains over Kyushu Island in Japan caused flooding that killed at least 37 people and prompted the evacuation of more than 200,000 others
