  • 1720: Sweden and Denmark signed a peace treaty
  • 1900: Tsar Nicholas of Russia issued a decree that abolished the banishment of dissidents and troublemakers to Siberia
  • 1966: Race riots occurred in Omaha Nebraska
  • 1989: The US Supreme Court ruled states do not have to provide funds for abortions
  • 2005: Spain’s law legalizing same-sex marriage took effect
  • 2014: Germany passed its first nation-wide minimum wage law, setting the minimum wage at 8.5 Euros
  • 2018: US Justice and Education Departments rescinded Obama affirmative action policies in college admissions
  • 2018: The worst monsoon rains in decades swamped Lahore, Pakistan and killed 6 people
  • 2019: Heavy monsoon rains struck Mumbai and the surrounding Maharashtra state in India killing at least 43 people. It was the worst flooding in a decade
  • 2019: More than a million people were ordered to evacuate the Japanese island of Kyushu amid warnings of mudslides after 1,000mm (39in) of rainfall
