- 1811: 7 Venezuelan provinces declared themselves independent of Spain
- 1852: Frederick Douglass delivered his ‘What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?’ speech condemning the celebration as a hypocritical sham
- 1922: The Netherlands held its first general election
- 1922: Women were allowed to vote in Dutch elections for the first time
- 1935: US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the US National Labor Relations Act
- 1939: Flash floods killed 79 in Northeast Kentucky
- 1941: German occupiers disbanded political parties
- 1962: Algeria gained independence after 132 years of French rule
- 1971: The 26th Amendment to the US Constitution, reducing the voting age to 18, was certified
- 1975: The Cape Verde Islands gained independence after 500 years of Portuguese rule
- 2018: A heatwave in southern Quebec, Canada killed 33
- 2019: An earthquake in Southern California measuring a 7.1 magnitude occurred near Ridgecrest
