- International Amateur Radio Day
- 1783: George Washington issued a General Order announcing the end of hostilities with Britain, giving thanks to God, offering congratulations, and authorizing an extra ration of alcohol to the troops to celebrate the end of the Revolutionary War
- 1868: The San Francisco Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed
- 1879: The Trial of Standing Bear-Crook on Native Americans’ citizen’s rights began
- 1880: A tornado struck Marshfield, Missouri, killing 99 people and injuring 100
- 1906: A massive earthquake and fire in San Francisco killed nearly 4,000 people while destroying 75% of the city
- 1918: The People’s Council of Latvia proclaimed Latvian independence
- 1945: Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Bolivia were established
- 1946: The League of Nations dissolved 3 months after the United Nations was established
- 1946: The International Court of Justice opened at The Hague, Netherlands
- 1949: The Republic of Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth
- 1956: Egypt and Israel agreed to a cease fire
- 1968: 178,000 employees of US Bell Telephone System went on strike
- 1978: The US Senate voted to return the Panama Canal to Panama on December 31, 1999
- 1980: Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia) declared independence from the UK
- 1990: The US Supreme Court ruled states could make it a crime to possess or look at child pornography, even in one’s home
- 1996: In Lebanon, at least 106 civilians were killed when the Israel Defense Forces accidentally shelled a UN compound
- 2007: The US Supreme Court upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act
- 2014: 12 Nepalese climbers were killed by an avalanche on Mt Everest
- 2018: Protests begin in Managua, Nicaragua, over proposed changes to social security where protesters were beaten by suspected pro-government gangs
- 2018: “Black Panther” was the first film shown at a commercial cinema in 35 years in Saudi Arabia as cinemas were reopened
- 2019: Irish Journalist Lyra McKee was shot to death while covering riots in Derry, Northern Ireland. The dissident republican group the New IRA claimed responsibility
