  • 1714: Spain and The Netherlands signed a peace and trade agreement
  • 1843: Hong Kong was proclaimed a British Crown Colony
  • 1914: The Indian Relief Act passed after a protracted period of Passive Resistance led by Gandhi. It abolished a £3 tax imposed on Indians who had not renewed their indentures and recognized the validity of Indian customary marriages
  • 1941: Lithuanian fascists massacred 2,300 Jews in Kovno
  • 1960: British Somaliland (now Somalia) gained independence from Britain
  • 1960: Italian Somaliland declared independence from Italian administration
  • 1960: Madagascar (formerly Malagasy Rep) declared independence from France
  • 1964: Blacks and Whites rioted over racial segregation in St Augustine
  • 1965: The Wallon Party formed in Belgium
  • 1975: The US Supreme Court ruled unanimously in O’Connor v. Donaldson that non-dangerous people can’t be confined to psychiatric facilities without adequate treatment if they are able to live viably in outside society
  • 1989: The US Supreme Court ruled 16 year olds may be eligible for the death penalty
  • 1992: The US Supreme Court ruled soliciting funds can be banned at airports
  • 1997: The US Supreme Court upheld a ban on doctor-assisted suicide
  • 1997: The US Supreme Court struck down the Communications Decency Act as inconsistent with the First Amendment
  • 2003: The US Supreme Court ruled in Lawrence v. Texas that gender-based sodomy laws were unconstitutional
  • 2008: The US Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns was unconstitutional.
  • 2015: The US Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage is a legal right across all US states
