Please note all holidays and observances listed as “National” days are American holidays and observances unless it is stated otherwise.

On This Day

  • 1096: The First Crusade slaughtered the Jews of Werelinghofen, Germany
  • 1298: 250 Jews killed in Rothenburg, Germany during the Rindfleisch Persecutions
  • 1526: The Diet of Speyer convened, which resulted in the Edict of Speyer and temporarily suspended the 1521 Edict of Worms which allowed Lutheranism and other “reforms” to propagate unimpeded throughout Germany
  • 1868: US President Andrew Johnson signed a law that government workers would work an 8 hour workday
  • 1876: In the Battle of the Little Bighorn the US 7th Cavalry under Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer was wiped out by Sioux and Cheyenne warriors led by Chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull in what has become famously known as “Custer’s Last Stand”
  • 1918: The Baku-Turkish Communist Party formed
  • 1938: A US federal minimum wage law guaranteed workers 25 cents per hour (rising to 40 cents by 1945) and a maximum 44 hour work week
  • 1941: US President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, which forbade racial discrimination in the defense industry
  • 1941: Germany invaded Dubno, Poland and gave permission to Ukrainians to do whatever they wanted to the 12,000 Jews living there
  • 1960: An earthquake occurred in NE Belgium
  • 1960: Madagascar gained independence from France
  • 1960: Somaliland was granted independence from the UK
  • 1964: Prince A Taylor became the first African American Methodist Bishop
  • 1978: Gilbert Baker, at a march in San Francisco, first used the rainbow flag as a symbol of gay pride
  • 1981: The US Supreme Court upheld the male-only draft registration as constitutional
  • 1985: The case of Thurman v City of Torrington was decided in favor of Tracey Thurman who was the first woman to sue a police department for violating her civil rights by not protecting her against her abusive husband
  • 1990: The US Supreme Court ruled family members cannot end the lives of comatose relatives unless those relatives had previously made their wishes explicitly known
  • 1991: Slovenia and Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia
  • 1998: In Clinton v. City of New York, the US Supreme Court declared the Line Item Veto Act of 1996 was unconstitutional
  • 2014: The US Supreme Court ruled that police cannot examine the digital contents of a cell phone without a court order
  • 2015: Obamacare subsidies in The Affordable Care Act were preserved by the US Supreme Court Ruling in King v Burwell
