  • Juneteenth
  • International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
  • World Sickle Cell Day
  • 1269: French King Louis IX decreed all Jews had to wear a yellow badge in public or be fined 10 livres of silver
  • 1862: Slavery was outlawed in US territories
  • 1865: US Union General Gordon Granger declared slaves were free in Texas
  • 1913: The Natives Land Act, Act No 27, passed in South Africa which confined Africans to hopelessly overcrowded reserves and deprived them of rights to purchase land outside of native reserves
  • 1921: The Turks and Christians of Palestine signed a friendship treaty against Jews
  • 1932: Hailstones killed 200 people in Hunan Province, China
  • 1943: A Race Riot occurred in Beaumont, Texas
  • 1961: Kuwait declared independence from the UK
  • 1961: The US Supreme Court struck down a provision in Maryland’s constitution requiring state office holders believe in God
  • 1964: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed the US Senate
  • 1968: 50,000 people participated in a Solidarity Day March of The Poor People’s Campaign
  • 1969: State troopers were ordered to Cairo, Illinois to quell racial disturbances
  • 1971: The Mayor of Columbus, Georgia declared a state of emergency due to a racial disturbance
  • 1980: A battle between police and demonstrators in Capetown, South Africa resulted in 34 people being killed
  • 1987: The US Supreme Court ruled schools teaching evolution do not need to also teach creation
  • 2006: The Prime Ministers of several northern European nations participated in a ceremonial “laying of the first stone” at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Spitsbergen, Norway.
  • 2012: A man was beheaded for witchcraft and sorcery in Saudi Arabia
  • 2017: Brexit negotiations began between United Kingdom and the European Union
  • 2018: Canada’s Senate voted to legalize recreational marijuana use becoming the first major economy to do so
