Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. On This Day

  • 1775: General George Washington forbade recruiting officers from enlisting black troops
  • 1939: Jews in Lodz, Poland were ordered to wear a yellow star of David
  • 1940: A blizzard struck the Midwestern US causing 154 people’s deaths (69 on a boat on the Great Lakes)
  • 1943: The Landwacht (NSB-political party) formed in the Netherlands
  • 1954: Lee Kuan Yew and others formed the People’s Action Party (PAP) in Singapore to work towards self-rule
  • 1968: The US Supreme Court declared unconstitutional an Arkansas law banning teaching evolution in public schools (Epperson v Arkansas)
  • 1970: Cyclone Bhola made landfall in East Pakistan (Bangladesh) killing up to 500,000 people, making it the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded
  • 1999: The magnitude 7.2 Düzce earthquake struck Turkey
  • 2017: A 7.3 earthquake hit near Halabjal, Iraq, on the border with Iran, killing over 500 people, with 7,000 people injured
