Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. On This Day

  • 1294: Jews were expelled from Berne, Switzerland
  • 1520: Spanish conquistadors were expelled from Tenochtitlan after an Aztec revolt against their rule. Many soldiers drowned in the escape, and Aztec emperor Montezuma II died during the struggle
  • 1894: Korea declared independence from China and asked for Japanese aid
  • 1914: Mahatma Gandhi was arrested for the first time after campaigning for Indian rights in South Africa
  • 1918: Prominent US Socialist and Pacifist Eugene Debs was arrested on charges of denouncing the government
  • 1933: 50,000 demonstrated in Antwerp against fascism and war
  • 1941: Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) declared Ukraine independent
  • 1944: There was a universal strike against Nazi terror in Copenhagen
  • 1951: The NAACP began a campaign against school segregation and discrimination
  • 1960: Zaire (formerly the Belgian Congo) declared independence from Belgium
  • 1962: Rwanda and Burundi became independent
  • 1982: The Federal Equal Rights Amendment failed, coming 3 states short of ratification
  • 1986: A Georgia sodomy law was upheld by the US Supreme Court
  • 1989: The New York State Legislature passed a Staten Island Secession Bill
  • 1990: East and West Germany merged their economies
  • 1997: The British lease on the New Territories in Hong Kong expired
  • 2005: Spain legalized same-sex marriage
  • 2012: Mid-Atlantic storms in the United States killed 13 people and left millions without power in Ohio, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia
  • 2014: The US Supreme Court ruled that family-owned corporations can reject provision of ‘Obamacare’ on religious grounds
  • 2017: Germany voted to legalize same-sex marriage
  • 2019: New York marked 50 years since the Stonewall Uprising which sparked the modern gay rights movement with huge pride marches
