- Hug Day
- 1906: The US Congress passed the Hepburn Act which permitted the regulation of rates charged by railroads, pipelines, and terminals engaged in interstate commerce
- 1932: The USSR and China signed a non-aggression treaty
- 1949: South Africa began implementing apartheid and disallowing mixed marriages
- 1964: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed after an 83-day filibuster in the US Senate
- 1967: Israel removed barricades and re-unified Jerusalem
- 1972: The US Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty is cruel and unusual
- 1976: The Seychelles became independent from the United Kingdom
- 1977: South African opposition party, the New Republic Party (NRP), was formed after the integration of the United Party (UP) and Democratic Party (DP)
- 1982: The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was extended
- 1991: A 6.0 earthquake hit southern California
- 1992: 2 earthquakes, including a 7.4 tremor, hit southern California
- 2006: In Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, the US Supreme Court ruled that President George W. Bush’s plan to try Guantanamo Bay detainees in military tribunals violated both US and international law
- 2016: US Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter lifted the Pentagon’s ban on transgender people serving in the US armed forces
