Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily.   • Resolution Renewal Day
  • National Financial Freedom Day
  • 1517: Protestants were burned at the stake in the Netherlands for the first time
  • 1543: England and Scotland signed the Peace Treaty of Greenwich
  • 1823: The United Provinces of Central America gained independence from Mexico
  • 1862: Alexander II of Russia granted Jews the right to publish books
  • 1863: Slavery was abolished in Suriname and Dutch Antilles
  • 1914: General J. B. M. Hertzog founded the Free State National Party
  • 1917: Race riots in East St Louis, Illinois resulted in the deaths of between 40-200 people
  • 1921: The Communist Party of China was founded
  • 1930: Great Britain signed an accord for the Independence of Iraq
  • 1933: The German Nazi regime declared that married women shouldn’t work
  • 1940: Australia refused entry to Dutch Jewish refugees
  • 1943: “Pay-as-you-go” withholding of income taxes from paychecks went into effect in the US
  • 1960: The Somali Democratic Republic, commonly known as Somalia, formed out of former British and Italian territories
  • 1960: Ghana became a republic
  • 1962: Algeria voted for independence from France
  • 1962: Burundi and Rwanda gained independence from Belgium
  • 1971: North Carolina became the 38th state to approve lowering the voting age to 18 which ratified the 26th amendment
  • 1971: The State of Washington became the first state to ban sex discrimination
  • 1972: The first Gay Pride march in England took place
  • 1976: Portugal granted autonomy to Madeira.
  • 1992: A 6.6 earthquake struck the Big Bear Valley area outside of Los Angeles, California
  • 1997: The United Kingdom returned Hong Kong and the New Territories to the People’s Republic of China
  • 1999: The Scottish Parliament was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Powers were transferred from the old Scottish Office in London to the new devolved Scottish Executive in Edinburgh
