Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • Global Day to End Child Sexual Abuse
  • National Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day
  • Palm Sunday
  • 1516: Venice forced Jews to live in a specific area, establishing the first Jewish ghetto
  • 1710: The first law regulating copyrights was issued in Great Britain
  • 1790: The US Patent system was formed
  • 1815: Mount Tambora, in the Dutch East Indies, experienced one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in history, killing around 71,000 people, and causing a global volcanic winter
  • 1826: 10,500 inhabitants of Messolonghi, Greece evacuating after a year long siege by Turkish forces. Their plans were betrayed however, and the majority of them were massacred by the Turkish forces
  • 1869: José Martí founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party
  • 1872: The first National black convention meets in New Orleans
  • 1915: The Castbergian Child Laws were adopted in Norway- some of the first laws in the world to protect the welfare of children born out of wedlock
  • 1923: Adolf Hitler demanded “hatred and more hatred” in a speech in Berlin
  • 1939: The Dutch government opened Camp Westerbork, a transit camp for German Jews being sent to concentration camps
  • 1972: A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the Iranian Fars Province and killed 1/5 of the people living in the province
  • 1979: During the Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak, a tornado touched down in Wichita Falls, Texas killing 42 people
  • 1983: Jordan’s King Hussein ceased negotiations with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)
  • 1984: The US Senate condemned the mining of Nicaraguan harbors by the CIA
  • 1991: A rare Southern Hemisphere tropical storm developed near Angola and was the first to be documented by satellites
  • 1995: New York City banned smoking in all restaurants seating 35 or more
  • 1996: The fastest non-tornado wind speed ever recorded (253 mph or 408 km/h) occurred during tropical cyclone Olivia on Barrow Island, Australia
  • 1998: The Good Friday Agreement aka Belfast Agreement was signed by the British and Irish governments
  • 2006: The largest day of protests as part of the 2006 immigration reform protests occurred with several hundred thousand people protesting across the US. The US House of Representatives had passed The Border Protection, Anti-terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (HR 4437) aka the “Sensenbrenner Bill” in December 2005, but it failed to pass the Senate. Despite its failure, it was the impetus for the protests regarding immigration laws and policies and proposed changes
  • 2016: Fireworks caused explosions and a fire at the Puttingal Temple in Kerala, India, causing the deaths of more than 100 people and injuring nearly 400
  • 2016: Hong Kong’s pro-democracy political party Demosistō was established
