On This Day
- 1310: Fifty-four members of the Knights Templar were burned at the stake in France for being heretics
- 1421: Jews were expelled from Styria, Austria
- 1674: Netherlands and Cologne signed a peace treaty
- 1752: The first fire insurance policy in the US was issued in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- 1772: An Amsterdam theater was destroyed by fire. 18 were killed
- 1784: Britain and Tippu Sahib of Mysore signed a peace treaty
- 1953: A tornado killed 114 in Waco, Texas
- 1965: The first of 2 cyclones in less than a month killed 35,000 in India
- 1965: A windstorm in Bangladesh killed 17,000 people
- 1968: Students and police battled in Paris. Hundreds of people were injured
- 1995: More than 170 countries decided to extend the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty indefinitely and without conditions
