- 1509: Pope Julius II excommunicated the entire Italian state of Venice
- 1773: The British Parliament passed the Tea Act that would be a causal factor behind the Boston Tea Party
- 1838: Fire destroyed half of Charleston, South Carolina
- 1857: The establishing of Jewish congregations in Lower Austria was prohibited
- 1861: US President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus which prevented improper or indefinite detentions
- 1861: West Virginia seceded from Virginia after Virginia seceded from the Union
- 1881: Pogroms were carried out against Russian Jews starting in Elisabethgrad
- 1910: The Belgian Parliament rejected a socialist motion for general voting rights
- 1911: Passive resistance protests by Indians were suspended when General J.C. Smuts began negotiations with Gandhi
- 1920: Pogrom leader Petljoera declared Ukrainian Independence
- 1942: Belgian Jews were forced to wear stars
- 1942: A tornado destroyed Pryor, Oklahoma, killing 100 people and injuring 300 more
- 1950: South Africa passed the Group Areas Act segregating races
- 1953: The first general elections in British Guiana were held, won by the People’s Progressive Party with Cheddi Jagan becoming the first person of Indian descent to be elected head of government outside South Asia
- 1960: Togo, formerly known as French Togo, declared independence from French administration
- 1961: Sierra Leone declared independence from the UK
- 1968: The Congress of Political Party Radicals (PPR) formed in the Netherlands
- 1968: The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) held a rally to protest the banning of a Republican Easter parade
- 1989: Students took over Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China
- 1989: A hurricane killed 500 people in Bangladesh
- 1989: A mandatory seatbelt law went into effect in Italy
- 1992: Betty Boothroyd became the first woman to be elected Speaker of the British House of Commons in its 700-year history
- 1994:Day 2 of 3 in South Africa’s first multi-racial elections had the most voters, with people waiting in line 10 hours to vote
- 2011: The deadliest day of the 2011 super outbreak of tornadoes, the largest tornado outbreak in United States history, which overall brought 324 deaths, over 3100 injuries, and caused over $10.2 billion in damage from 360 tornadoes
- 2018: In a historic Korean summit, the North’s Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in of South Korea agreed to officially end Korean war and rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons, though the denuclearization promise has yet to be fulfilled
- 2018: Mass protests swept across Spain after 5 men were convicted of sexual abuse but not rape of a teenage girl during the Running of the Bulls festival in Pamplona
- 2020: Global confirmed cases of COVID-19 passed 3 million with the death toll reaching 205,000. 1/3 of all new cases were in the US
