On This Day
- 1431: Joan of Arc experienced her first day of interrogation during her trial for heresy
- 1866: Lucy B Hobbs (Taylor) became the first woman in the US to earn a DDS degree
- 1919: A revolutionary strike took place in Barcelona
- 1922: Britain declared Egypt a sovereign state
- 1943: Dutch Roman Catholic bishops protested against persecution of the Jews
- 1946: Anti-British demonstrations occurred in Egypt
- 1965: Rights activist Malcolm X was shot dead by Nation of Islam followers at Audubon Ballroom in New York City
- 1968: 150,000 people demonstrated against leftist students in West Berlin
- 1971: A series of tornadoes cut through Mississippi and Louisiana killing 117 people
- 1972: Richard Nixon became the first US President to visit China, normalizing relations between the countries in a meeting with Chinese leader Mao Zedong in Beijing
- 2004: The first European political party organization, the European Greens, was established in Rome
- 2014: Police in Kiev opened fire on protesters killing 27 people and injuring around 570
