• 311: Roman Emperor Galerius issued the Edict of Toleration ending persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire
• 1315: French chamberlain Enguerrand de Marigny was hanged on the public gallows at Montfaucon after being convicted of sorcery
• 1349: The Jewish community of Radolfzell, Germany was exterminated
• 1492: Spain announced it would expel all Jews
• 1563: The Jews were expelled from France by order of Charles VI
• 1763: Member of Parliament and journalist John Wilkes was confined in the Tower of London, charged with seditious libel for criticizing King George III’s speech endorsing the Paris Peace Treaty
• 1838: Nicaragua declared independence from the Central American Federation
• 1864: New York became the first state to charge a hunting license fee
• 1871: 144 Aravaipas and Pinal Native Americans were killed and mutilated by a group of Americans and Tohono O’odham during the Camp Grant Massacre in the Arizona Territory. 29 children were taken prisoner and sold into slavery in Mexico
• 1888: Hail stones allegedly as big as oranges killed 246 people and some 1600 sheep and cattle in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh
• 1911: Portugal approved female suffrage
• 1920: The British Government ended military conscription
• 1937: The Philippines held a plebiscite for Filipino women on whether they should be extended the right to suffrage with over 90% voting in favor
• 1943: A Dutch strike against forced labor in Nazi Germany’s war industry began
• 1945: Prisoners at the Munchen-Allag Concentration Camp were freed
• 1945: The Soviet Army liberated the Ravensbruck Concentration Camp
• 1955: The Imperial Bank of India was nationalized
• 1955: West German unions protested in favor of a 40-hour work week and higher wages
• 1966: Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan in San Francisco, California
• 1977: The human rights group Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo began protesting the forced disappearances of thousands under the military dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla
• 2004: Media in the US released graphic photos of American soldiers abusing and sexually humiliating Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison
• 2018: The Pakistani city of Nawabshah set a global record for an April temperature, recording a high of 50.2C (122F)
