Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. Please note all holidays and observances listed as “National” days are American holidays and observances unless it is stated otherwise.

On This Day

  • 1640: Portugal asserted independence after 60 years of Spanish rule beginning the Portuguese Restoration War which lasted until 1668 when Spain finally recognized the country’s independence
  • 1742: Empress Elisabeth ordered the expulsion of all Jews from Russia
  • 1750: The first school in America to offer manual training courses opened in Maryland
  • 1821: Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) proclaimed independence from Spain
  • 1913: The Ford Motor Company instituted the world’s first moving assembly line for the Model T
  • 1918: The Danish Parliament passed an act to grant Iceland independence under the Danish crown
  • 1918: Yugoslavia declared independence
  • 1919: Lady Nancy Astor was sworn-in as the first female member of the British Parliament
  • 1934: Leningrad Mayor Sergey Kirov was assassinated and Joseph Stalin used it as an excuse to begin his Great Purge of 1934-38
  • 1939: SS-Fuhrer Himmler began the deportation of Polish Jews
  • 1955: Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to move to the back of a bus to give her seat to a white rider in Montgomery, Alabama
  • 1959: 12 nations signed a treaty for the scientific, peaceful use of Antarctica
  • 1973: Australia granted self-government to Papua New Guinea
  • 1988: 596 people died and half a million people were left homeless when a cyclone hit Bangladesh
  • 1988: Benazir Bhutto was named the first female Prime Minister of a Muslim country, Pakistan
  • 1991: The Ukrainian people voted for independence
  • 2016: The UN admitted its peacekeepers were responsible for the cholera epidemic in Haiti in 2010 that killed 30,000 people
  • 2018: Demonstrations in Paris and throughout France, by the Yellow-Vest Movement with an estimated 36,000 people protesting nationwide
